Second Nature Wilderness Programs attract staff and therapists from across the country due to its reputation for providing the highest-level training and most sophisticated model in the field of wilderness therapy.
Second Nature can provide families with therapists who are expert in many diagnostic areas such as substance abuse, mood disorders, NLD, abuse, trauma, anger management, and dual-diagnosis. Each student has a Ph.D. or Masters level clinician as the leader of his/ her treatment team. Second Nature’s clinical team is unequaled in the field of wilderness therapy. Therapists carrying a caseload often train for a year or more at Second Nature before they assume their own groups.
Beyond simple intuitive or narrative descriptions of your child’s progress, your therapist will provide sophisticated yet accessible psychological theory to assess behaviors, create family assignments, and develop recommendations for aftercare planning. Families often attest that their Second Nature therapist was able to ascertain problems and create interventions far more effectively than previous experiences offered.
Second Nature Field Instructors consist of committed individuals who engage in an extensive training process. Competence in outdoor medical training, de-escalation training, clinical services, and primitive living skills are part of the curriculum. Second Nature Field Instructors develop clinical qualities unrivaled in therapeutic wilderness care. Creativity, affinity for outdoor living, sensitivity, compassion, flexibility and patience along with desire to help young people lead healthy and productive lives are all prerequisites for the Field Instructor position.
Each Second Nature Wilderness Program has a medical director who monitors psychotropic medications. Access to a psychiatric assessment and visits may also be provided as directed by the primary therapist.
